Short answer

The Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone Palette. Its ten alcohol-activated colors include five base skin tones, a brown and four adjusters, so you can mix a match for fair to olive skin. Retailer Makeup Mania describes the line as durable, water and abrasion resistant, and says it works on foam latex, gelatin, plastic and silicone as well as skin.

At a glance

Best for

  • Makeup artists coloring prosthetics, bald caps and appliances
  • Covering tattoos: correct the ink first, then match the skin
  • Matching many fair to olive skin tones from one palette

Skip it if

  • You don't want to buy an activator: it only works with 99% alcohol or Skin Illustrator Activator
  • You're matching deep skin: Skin Illustrator makes a separate palette for that
  • You want everyday makeup that washes off with water

What we like

  • Ten mixable tones with warm and cool adjusters
  • Water and abrasion resistant, per retailer Makeup Mania
  • Works on skin and on foam latex, gelatin and silicone, per Makeup Mania
  • A buyer says the palette lasts quite some time

Good to know

  • Needs 99% alcohol or Skin Illustrator Activator, never water or 70% alcohol
  • Comes off with a remover such as Telesis, not soap and water
  • Cracks in the dried color cells are normal and don't affect it, per the maker

Why makeup artists mix with it

Base tones plus adjusters

Skin Illustrator built the palette around five base tones: Rice Paper, Natural 1 and 2 for many fair tones, Lao 1 and 2 for yellow undertones. Cedar Brown darkens, and the coral, olive, rose and vein-tone adjusters warm or cool a mix until it matches.

Made to last on skin and appliances

Retailer Makeup Mania describes the line as durable, water and abrasion resistant alcohol-activated makeup that works on foam latex, gelatin, plastic and silicone, the materials prosthetics are made from.

A tattoo-cover method a buyer uses

A buyer who reviewed it in 2025 on Mouldlife says it's her most used palette for covering tattoos: she knocks the ink back with the olive and coral adjusters, then covers it with the flesh tones.

How to use it

  1. Activate the color with Skin Illustrator Activator, Slow Activator or 99% alcohol. Skin Illustrator says not to use 70% alcohol, MEK, acetone, water or any other solvent.
  2. Spray or dab the activator onto the color and swirl for at least 30 seconds.
  3. Apply with a brush, sponge or mascara wand.
  4. Pick a base tone, then add an adjuster: coral or rose to warm, vein tone or olive to cool, Cedar Brown to darken.
  5. To cover a tattoo, knock the ink back with the olive and coral adjusters first, then cover it with the flesh tones, the method a buyer describes.
  6. Remove with Telesis Beta Solv, Telesis Super Solv or Telesis Makeup Remover.
